Focusing on Seniors This Winter

This winter, Toni’s Kitchen is making special efforts to ensure older adults at risk of food insecurity are connected to appropriate supports. Why the special effort? Why now?

Low income seniors are especially at risk as $1 trillion in federal cuts begin to impact programs such as Medicaid (used by 7.2 million adults 65+) and SNAP (over 6 million enrolled). These resources stabilize low income seniors, freeing up their fixed incomes to help cover basic needs: buy medicine, be able to turn on the heat, and keep them secure in their housing. This past summer, Toni’s Kitchen began to analyze data on where seniors using SNAP, Medicaid, and subsidized housing are located and how to connect to ensure they have appropriate food as these new cuts roll out. Building these connections now and understanding their particular needs will help ensure these neighbors don’t slip into instability as the supports they rely on are cut.
